Government of Canada Invests in Digitization of Canadian Multicultural Newspapers
James Moore, minister of Canadian Heritage announced funding for Athabasca University's "Connecting Canadians: Canada's Multicultural Newspapers" project. This project includes the digitization and deployment of "20 multicultural newspapers on the web on an open-access basis" meant to aid in "understanding the history of early immigrants to Canada." The archival project is one that is receiving adequate funding from the Canadian Government, as "[p]rojects like 'Connecting Canadians: Canada's Multicultural Newspapers' go a long way toward making Canadian culture accessible anywhere in the world." Thus, the government (primarily Canadian Heritage) is "proud to invest in ventures like this through the Partnerships Fund," as they are certain that "[a] digital archive of immigrant community newspapers, freely available to scholars, students, and the general public, will give Canadians a much stronger connection with their shared heritage."
